One of her earlier works is out of print and if you can find it, sells for many times its original price. This book is well written, the patterns are clearly drawn, and the text is enjoyable.
I feel mildly disappointed. Of the 12 patterns given, I will actually produce one, maybe two, of them. Is that a flaw of the book?
Probably not. The patterns appear to be of a more primitive style, so that if you are looking for finer applique, you may want to examine this book more thoroughly before buying it.
I think I can adapt the patterns I like by reducing the thickness of the stems and adding more detail to the flowers, maybe even some embroidery.
Yes, I'll keep it, but it won't be on the shelf with my favorite quilting books. The book starts out with the story of women on the prairie, which I found very interesting.
The actual block are good sized and have fairly large pieces, which is great for someone new to the applique world. Some of the blocks do have smaller pieces, but I may get adventuresome after doing a large block or two and try one of these.
If you are an applique lover, I think you will like this book. Lovely applique book with full page patterns and a glimpse of what life was like on the prairie!
Can't wait to read this! Although Mount Pleasant was founded in , the earliest headstone within its fenced boundaries dates to , a year before Milford was settled.
Hostetler also produced written accounts of where the Ponca camped. Based on the location, the mourners would have had to ford the Blue River to reach Milford but would have had a straight route north to Mount Pleasant.
Considering that spring rains likely pushed the river to flood stage, it's unlikely they would have crossed the river unless no other option existed.
While others might still claim that the grave is in Milford, their claims rely on anecdote rather than documentation, Hostetler said.
Steinhausen told his fellow sleuths his role was to apply skepticism to their work. Initially, he said he was about 60 percent convinced.
After reviewing the documentation, he ratcheted his confidence up to 90 percent. None of the men will say they know, without a doubt, that Prairie Flower and the two Ponca children are buried at Mount Pleasant.
Proof could be obtained if the graves were exhumed and the living descendants of Prairie Flower agreed to DNA testing. Without physical evidence, the historian must make allowances for the vagaries of century-old records, the inconsistency of memory and the context of the period.
Or, as Fosler put it: "In those days, they didn't worry so much about writing things down as they worried about getting something to eat.
But maybe whether they're precisely right isn't even the most important thing. To the thinking of Hugh Riley, an assistant professor of communications at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, it's more important to know why Prairie Flower died than where she's buried.
For the Ponca, the cost was staggering. By , just a year after they walked away from Swift Running Water with bayonets at their backs, of their small nation were dead, Riley said.
Mostly disease and starvation had claimed more than half of a people who two years before had thrived in northeast Nebraska.
The Ponca should decide what to do about this new information regarding Prairie Flower. Mark Peniska, chairman of the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska, said Friday afternoon he was preparing for a weekend drive to Macy.
On Sunday, the people will gather for the funeral of Raymond Wolfe, the last surviving grandson of Standing Bear, Peniska said. He sounded pleased with the work of the amateur historians.
If nothing else, they're focusing attention on history unknown by many. He said he will seek the counsel of tribal elders. Disturbing the remains for DNA analysis seems unlikely, he said, but perhaps there would be interest in a historical marker.
While many, many suffered on the Ponca's trail of tears, Peniska said his thoughts often fix on Standing Bear. Reach Joe Duggan at or jduggan journalstar.
